Hundreds of residents in southwest Bakersfield avoided holiday spending this weekend by attending a free trunk-or-treat event. The gathering took place Sunday at the parking lot of Clinica Sierra Vista, where lines of visitors wrapped around the facility ahead of October 31.
The clinic, which is currently marking its 55th anniversary, organized the afternoon to connect neighborhood households with local support networks. Volunteers decorated vehicle trunks with seasonal themes and filled them with candy for children and adults dressed in costumes. The free admission allowed families to gather without the financial pressure often associated with holiday outings.
Jamie Lujan, a grandmother attending the event, noted that the cost-free format removed a common barrier for her household. She explained that the event allowed her to bring the entire family without calculating expenses or worrying about whether they could afford to stay.
Community groups used the crowd to provide direct information on available services. Hannah Weightman, a representative for the Community Action Partnership of Kern, participated with a Hocus Pocus themed trunk. She stated that the event provided a direct channel to inform residents about resources many did not know existed in Kern County.
Dr. Olga Meave, the clinic's CEO, described the event as a method for the organization to offer relief during a period of financial strain. She emphasized the clinic's commitment to providing free opportunities to the community when circumstances make other options difficult.
