Ten years of business came to a close on Thursday morning at 6785 Santa Monica Blvd. when Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts shut its doors for the last time. The bright pink storefront, located in Hollywood, stopped serving its signature Mangonada and Horchata-flavored pastries to a crowd of early risers who gathered to mark the occasion.
Heather Brown, chair of the counseling department at Hollywood High School, arrived at the shop to pick up a final batch of treats. Brown stated that she regularly stops by the location to bring donuts for meetings and parent nights. She noted that the business has frequently provided extra pastries for school events. Brown described the closure as sad, noting that she drives past the shop daily on her commute to the high school.
The shop was operated by actor Danny Trejo, an Echo Park native known for his roles in the “Machete” film series. Trejo also manages several taco locations in the area under the name Trejo’s Tacos. His film career began in 1985 when he was cast in “Runaway Train” after training actor Eric Roberts in boxing. He later collaborated with director Robert Rodriguez on films including “Desperado” and “From Dusk Till Dawn” during the 1990s.
Trejo has spoken publicly about his connection to Los Angeles. In 2020, while being honored by the Los Angeles City Council, he said, “I love this city. I adore this city.” He referenced a promise made in 1968 while at Soledad prison, stating, “Let me die with dignity. I will say your name every day, and I will do whatever I can for my fellow man.”
The closure coincides with the expiration of the shop's lease. An Instagram post from the business explained that it was time to close the chapter at the Hollywood location. The post indicated that the shop is not ending permanently, but rather relocating. It read, “This is definitely not a final goodbye, we’re so excited to welcome you all to our next spot! Stay tuned here for updates on where we’ll be heading next.”
Customers who remained in the queue on Thursday expressed their fondness for the specific items on the menu. Gabi Birkner, a journalist and digital content strategist, purchased horchata and mangonada donuts. She described the event as the end of an era. The shop's future location has not yet been announced.
The business had operated in Hollywood for nearly a decade. Trejo’s familiar face appeared on posters, murals, and billboards throughout the area. The Instagram post suggested that the brand would return in a new setting soon. The Hollywood location has been closed since Thursday morning.
