The 2026-27 NBA season presents a distinct opportunity for thirty players to advance their professional standing, according to a new tiered analysis.

The report categorizes these athletes into four groups based on their current credentials and projected improvement. Tier 1 identifies multitime All-Stars who may win their first MVP award. Victor Wembanyama, who finished third in voting last season and led the Spurs to the Finals at age 22, is listed as a top candidate. The French center must improve his isolation scoring and closing ability to secure the title. Luka Doncic of the Lakers is also in this tier. The 27-year-old has never finished higher than third in MVP voting, but a new supporting cast and increased usage after LeBron James' departure could change that, provided his health allows the team to reach 50 wins. Cade Cunningham, Anthony Edwards, and Tyrese Maxey round out the first group, with each facing specific hurdles such as playoff performance or shooting efficiency.

Tier 2 focuses on players with at least one All-Star selection who could enter the top-15 conversation. Scottie Barnes of the Raptors is expected to benefit from playing alongside Kawhi Leonard. The 25-year-old forward is described as a strong defensive asset and offensive player. Chet Holmgren of the Thunder is flagged as a potential buy-low option. The 24-year-old center is considered the league's best rim protector after Wembanyama and may see increased offensive responsibility following Jalen Williams' ankle injury. Jalen Johnson of the Hawks is included after receiving the keys to the offense following Trae Young's departure, though he faltered during the previous playoffs.

Tier 3 lists big names aspiring for their first All-Star selection. Cooper Flagg, the 2026 Rookie of the Year, is back for his second season with a new coach and a healthy Kyrie Irving. The 19-year-old led Dallas in points, rebounds, assists, and steals last year, though a shoulder injury sustained this week could impact his availability. Austin Reaves of the Lakers signed a four-year, $180 million extension this summer after going undrafted in 2021. Jalen Thompson of the Rockets signed a five-year, $208 million deal. Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper of the Spurs are also in this tier, with Harper forcing his way into the starting lineup during the 2026 Finals run. Jaden McDaniels of the Timberwolves and LaMelo Ball's replacement in Charlotte, Brandon Miller, complete the list. Miller signed a five-year, $209 million extension earlier this month.

Tier 4 includes former backups looking to impact the starting lineup. Ty Jerome of the Grizzlies scored a career-high 45 points in the season opener against the Utah Jazz. The 29-year-old guard was a 2025 Sixth Man of the Year finalist. Naz Reid of the Hornets, traded from the Timberwolves, is positioned as a frontcourt starter. Cason Wallace of the Thunder signed a five-year, $139 million contract to replace Luguentz Dort. Oso Maluach of the Suns started center on opening night after Mark Williams underwent shoulder surgery in September. The 20-year-old big man is viewed as a long-term asset for Phoenix due to his 7-1 frame and rim protection potential.

The report notes that breakout definitions vary by talent and experience. Recent trades and rookie status influenced the tier placements. The analysis assumes current health statuses and roster moves remain in effect through the season.
