Nine people died when a private jet crashed into a residential area in south Florida on Sunday. The impact struck the ground at 12:50 p.m. Eastern Time near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the incident a horrible tragedy.
The aircraft was a Learjet 60. It hit Military Trail directly at the entrance of a mobile home park. Videos from the scene show the plane falling at high speed and creating a large fireball. A crater formed on the side of the road where the jet landed. Debris scattered across a wide area. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office reported major damage to local infrastructure and closed several roads.
Resident Ron DeSantis told reporters the plane looked like a missile falling from the sky. He confirmed that no one on the ground was killed or injured. Approximately 600 residents from the mobile home community are being evacuated. They are being moved to two county shelters while federal agents investigate the site.
Meteorological data from Miami's next-generation radar offers a possible cause. The jet entered the core of a thunderstorm near Wellington minutes before the crash. Tracking data shows the plane climbed about 450 feet into the storm center. It then entered a spiral dive and struck the earth 76 seconds later.
Audio recordings from air traffic control provide a timeline of the final minutes. The pilot reported light and clear ice buildup along with moderate turbulence that shook the aircraft. The pilot stated the conditions were manageable. The situation changed quickly as the plane began to lose altitude rapidly.
The pilot declared an emergency over the radio. The descent rate reached 8,000 feet per minute. The pilot shouted mayday and reported the rate increasing to 10,000 feet per minute. The aircraft hit overspeed conditions. The pilot announced a descent of 20,000 feet per minute. The final transmission was a warning that the plane was going to hit the ground.
Authorities have not released the names of those on board. The aircraft is private. Military Trail is expected to remain closed for 30 days. Alternative routes have been established for drivers. More information will be released as the investigation continues.
