Four electric SUVs under $25,000 lead the used market

The used car market for electric vehicles has shifted enough that a budget of $25,000 now opens the door to newer models with substantial capabilities. This change offers drivers the ability to own a gas-free vehicle without the high costs associated with new EVs. Edmunds, an automotive website, has compiled a list of four specific models that offer the best value in this price bracket. The selection focuses on vehicles that maintain versatility and comfort while staying affordable.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV, introduced for the 2024 model year, tops the list for its balance of range and features. The EPA estimates that this vehicle can travel up to 319 miles on a single charge. Edmunds experts describe the car as a compelling option for buyers wanting a small SUV with surprising interior space. They recommend targeting the 2LT trim for the best experience. This version includes heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and a hands-free liftgate. It also comes with adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera system.
Ford’s Mustang Mach-E, which debuted in 2021, is recognized for its sporty driving dynamics. The vehicle features an upscale interior and an infotainment system with physical controls for common functions. An available extended-range battery pack allows the Mach-E to exceed 300 miles on a charge. Edmunds advises that while the GT trim is powerful, the Premium trim provides sufficient performance. Buyers should look for 2021 to 2023 models to stay within the $25,000 limit. The Premium trim with the extended-range battery offers the best range in the lineup.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been a favorite of Edmunds since its launch in 2022. The car is noted for its quick acceleration, comfort, and user-friendly interface. Its design is described as retro-futuristic, setting it apart from more subdued competitors. The vehicle offers generous passenger space and fast charging times. Edmunds points out that many low-mileage 2022 to 2024 models are available under $25,000. Buyers are advised to avoid the base SE Standard Range trim, which has an EPA range estimate of only 220 miles. Rear-wheel-drive models with the larger battery pack deliver 303 miles of range.
The Volkswagen ID.4 combines a comfortable ride with a spacious interior suitable for daily use. Depending on the version, the EPA estimates the vehicle can travel up to 275 miles on a charge. The cabin offers generous cargo capacity, making it practical for families. Edmunds notes that while the ID.4 is not the most exciting EV to drive, its low cost compensates for that. Significant depreciation has made nearly new, low-mileage examples easy to find. The 2023 Pro S trim is recommended because it includes a larger standard touchscreen, synthetic leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof.
Edmunds cautions that the cheapest electric vehicle is not always the best long-term choice. Buyers should consider their specific daily needs and preferences. The goal is to find a used electric SUV that remains satisfying to own for several years. Bradley Iger, a contributor at Edmunds, provided the analysis for this story.
