A viral social media trend known as the door-kicking challenge has spread across residential neighborhoods in Hawaii, causing property damage and fear among residents. The activity involves teenagers approaching random houses late at night to deliver heavy blows to front doors before fleeing the scene.

Authorities describe the behavior as a simulation of a home invasion. Participants run up to a dwelling and kick or bang on the exterior with high impact. This pattern has persisted in Maui for several months, as evidenced by home surveillance footage showing teens striking doors in the middle of the night.

Matt, a homeowner on Maui Lani who requested anonymity due to fear of retaliation, spent nearly $14,000 on repairs and security upgrades. He recalled the specific moment the incident occurred at his home. “When you’re in the house at 1:30 in the morning and you’re sleeping and you hear this violent pounding on the door, it’s a little unsettling,” he said.

Mae, a resident of Ewa Beach on Oahu, experienced a similar event around 9 p.m. She reported that the front door was kicked approximately five times with such force that the entire house shook. “It literally was so powerful that it shook the whole house and it felt like somebody was trying to break down the door,” Mae said. “I was terrified.”

Mae noted that the trend is not isolated to her immediate area. She stated that another neighbor nearby suffered forceful kicking on their doors. “I really feel so bad for that family that they also have been experiencing forceful kicking on their doors,” she said. Both homeowners avoided sharing their full names or specific locations to protect their privacy.

Matt has filed multiple police reports and contacted his homeowners association. He expressed a desire for accountability while acknowledging the age of the suspects. “Of course we want justice,” he said. “In the same breath, I have a heart, and if you strip all of this away from the individual, they’re really just kids .. I’m not sure if this is a cry for help.”

Mae addressed the teenagers responsible directly. “Times are hard. It is expensive to fix things and it’s very disrespectful,” she said. She urged parents to discuss property respect with their children. Matt is now asking his community to help identify the individuals involved.
