Congressional races in North Texas often involve intense local debates, but a recent arrest has raised the stakes for one candidate. Rep. Keith Self, a Republican running for his third term, confirmed that federal agents have detained a local teenager accused of plotting to assassinate him.

The FBI arrested the 17-year-old from McKinney on October 5. Self's campaign team learned of the detention through U.S. Capitol Police the following day. Officials stated that investigators believed the teen had been radicalized and was already under surveillance by federal agents before the arrest.

Authorities told the congressman's staff that the suspect planned a terrorist attack in the name of ISIS. The target was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was to feature former Cowboys players and several high-profile guests, making it a high-visibility target for the alleged plot.

Self said his response was shaped by his background in the military. He noted that he had deployed to combat zones multiple times, which helped him remain calm. He explained that people without that experience often panic when told someone is trying to kill them, but he focused on determining if the suspect was a lone wolf. He also mentioned that his wife, a military spouse for 25 years, understands the inherent risks of public service.

The campaign increased its security measures as early voting continued across the state. Self said the team became more vigilant and adjusted their situational awareness. Although he had received threats before, he noted that this was the first time a threat resulted in an arrest. He described the incident as serious and potentially very significant given the details provided by investigators.

Despite the alleged plot, Self attended the chili cook-off as planned. He reported judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans. He stated that nothing happened during the event and that he enjoyed the time. He has continued his campaigning schedule, including morning poll greeting to meet voters.

Self said the incident will not deter him from his work. He believes it is important to alert the American people to specific political ideologies. He plans to continue doing his job and engaging with constituents in his district. His opponent, Evan Hunt, also condemned the plot in a social media post.

This development occurs as Self takes a prominent stance against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding resolution denouncing its implementation in the United States. The resolution states that the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land. His district includes McKinney, where a new mosque expansion has drawn attention and caused some local debate. The teen's identity has not been released publicly as the investigation continues.
