The Los Angeles Rams fielded a 48-man roster that included two kickers for their 24-9 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Head coach Sean McVay placed Brandon McManus on the roster for field goals and extra points while activating Joshua Karty from the practice squad to execute all kickoffs.
Karty utilizes a specific technique that causes the ball to bounce unpredictably, making it difficult for returners to secure possession. His opening kickoff resulted in a bobbled return by Chargers player Derius Davis, who advanced the ball only nine yards. This gave the Rams defensive unit a shorter distance to cover before tackling the returner.
McVay explained that the strategy relies on outcomes from the 2025 season where Karty successfully produced difficult kicks. The coach noted that roster limitations often prevent such tactics, but the current alignment allowed for the experiment. McVay stated that the goal is to secure the ball before the return team gains momentum and sets up.
The approach carried risk, as Karty landed two kickoffs in front of the legal landing zone. These placements resulted in penalties that moved the ball to the Chargers' 40-yard line. Despite the imperfections, McVay viewed the method as a solution to a persistent problem with kickoff coverage.
The Rams struggled to cover kickoffs in their previous game against the Las Vegas Raiders. In that contest, McVay opted for touchbacks and automatic placements at the 35-yard line. He described that strategy as unsustainable over a long season. The two-kicker setup aims to provide a more consistent advantage on special teams.
McManus completed all four of his scoring attempts without error. The Rams will evaluate the weekly roster needs to determine if Karty remains active for future games. The decision depends on the specific requirements of the defense and special teams unit for each matchup.
The next game will test the durability of this special teams strategy. The Rams will look to replicate the kickoff success while managing the risk of penalties. McVay indicated that the team will continue to monitor the results of Karty's placements.
