Anthropic is on track for an initial public offering this year, with market expectations placing the company's valuation at up to two trillion dollars. This prospective listing will create a significant financial windfall for the venture capital firms and individual investors who backed the artificial intelligence lab. However, the financial gains are not limited to the future public market. At the company's most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by key backers already represent billions of dollars in equity value.

The numbers behind these positions vary widely depending on entry price and investment size. Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, made an early move in 2021 by participating in the Series A round. At that time, the startup was valued at $461 million according to PitchBook data. That early entry has allowed Schmidt to accumulate approximately one percent of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly ten billion dollars.

Later-stage investors have also seen substantial appreciation in their holdings. Iconiq wrote a check for six billion dollars last year when the company was valued at $183 billion. That massive commitment is now valued at $17 billion. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested more than one billion dollars over time. Their stake is currently worth $14 billion. These figures suggest that the value of their positions could double if the company reaches the top end of its expected IPO valuation range.

Newer entrants to the cap table have also realized rapid returns. Sequoia Capital first backed the AI lab earlier this year, at a valuation of $380 billion. The firm invested three billion dollars to secure about one percent ownership. This investment has already more than doubled in value. Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C. The firm subsequently added another $400 million, resulting in a stake now worth billions. Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to start a new venture capital firm.

Perhaps the most dramatic multiple belongs to Spark Capital. The firm, which holds the only known board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has grown more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of seven billion dollars. The contrast between the $5 billion entry valuation and the current $965 billion figure highlights the explosive growth of the AI sector.

The stakes for these investors are high as the company approaches its public debut. While the private market has already delivered historic returns, the IPO promises to unlock further liquidity. The gap between the current private valuation and the potential two trillion dollar public price tag represents a significant opportunity for capital appreciation. For the backers listed here, the coming months will determine whether their paper wealth translates into realized gains at the highest projected levels.

Market observers note that the diversity of entry points, from Schmidt's 2021 Series A to Sequoia's recent entry, illustrates the breadth of interest in the AI market. As the IPO date approaches, the focus will shift from private mark-to-market valuations to public trading prices. The financial outcomes for these major holders will serve as a key indicator of investor sentiment toward the broader AI economy.
