Apple is reportedly ramping up manufacturing of its new folding smartphone to meet an unexpected surge in customer interest. Supply chain reports indicate that the company has increased its initial order volumes by more than 40 percent in response to what internal sources described as extraordinary demand for the device.

When pre-orders opened on Friday, delivery estimates shifted almost immediately, with some customers seeing dates pushed back to late January. While it was initially unclear if these delays reflected a shortage of inventory or simply high consumer interest, the latest data suggests the latter is the primary driver. Apple stated that the extended wait times were due to this unprecedented level of demand for its first foldable iPhone, a term it has frequently used during previous major product launches. To help manage the rush and reduce the impact of resellers, the company limited purchases to a maximum of two units per customer.

As anticipated, some early buyers have since received updated shipping estimates that are earlier than their initial quotes. This adjustment aligns with a recent report from DigiTimes, which cites supply chain sources indicating that Apple has actively increased its production output. The company appears confident that demand will remain strong over the coming year, prompting a significant revision of its shipment targets for the first twelve months.

Specifically, Apple has raised its projected shipments for the device from 9.7 million units to 14 million units. This substantial increase reflects the company's assessment that the market appetite for the new hardware is far greater than previously modeled. The move suggests that Apple is positioning itself to ensure sufficient stock availability as the product moves from its initial launch phase into broader distribution.

Despite the production boost, early adopters face some software challenges. Third-party applications have not yet been fully optimized for the new device's unique hardware configuration. However, Apple asserts that the situation is improving rapidly as developers adapt their software to support the new platform. Initial reviews based on a week of usage have consistently highlighted app support as a key area for improvement, alongside other functional aspects of the device.

One notable point of discussion in early feedback is the inclusion of Touch ID, which some users view as a step back from the facial recognition system found on other recent models. However, new reports suggest that Apple is already addressing this in its next iteration. Prototypes of the second-generation version of the device are currently being tested with Face ID, indicating that the company is planning to bring the more advanced biometric security feature to the folding line in the near future.
