The number 25 on the scoreboard represented a complete shutout, capping a quarterfinal loss for Sage Hill that was largely decided in the opening minutes of the second quarter. El Toro defeated the Lightning 25-0 at home to secure a berth in the Division 1 semifinals. The Chargers will face top-seeded Oxnard on Saturday.
El Toro converted three interceptions into touchdowns during a seven-play sequence early in the contest. Two of those scores came from pick six returns by Lauren Larsen. The sequence erased Sage Hill's momentum and established a lead that the visitors never threatened to challenge again. The Chargers' defense focused heavily on Sage Hill's primary offensive threats throughout the game.
Sage Hill head coach Bryan Orta noted the youth of his squad as a factor in the result. Orta, who previously coached at Villa Park and works with the Conquer Chargers, stated that the team played younger than expected. He described the outcome as a learning experience for a group that had improved dramatically from previous seasons. The Lightning had gone 16-20 in the first two years of the flag football program before this campaign.
The Lightning relied on freshman quarterback Brynn Uchida and a group of talented underclassmen to reach the quarterfinals. Receiver Khloe Brumfield had accumulated nearly 2,400 yards and 27 touchdowns before the matchup. El Toro head coach Thomas Ballogg said his staff studied Brumfield extensively, identifying her as the player to contain. The strategy limited Brumfield to two catches for three quarters, and she finished the game with five receptions for 47 yards.
Sage Hill finished second to Woodbridge in the Pacific Coast League and upset Western Christian in the previous round. The team entered the game with a 17-4 record. Despite the loss, Sage Hill played strong defense in the second half, keeping El Toro out of the red zone. The Lightning also drove near the goal line late in the game but were intercepted on their final two possessions.
Junior linebacker Elliot Trout said the team focused on playing hard in the second half to avoid feeling defeated after the game. She described the season as a major turnaround for the program. Trout emphasized that the current roster features a strong group of freshmen and that no players are graduating this year. The team believes it has a high chance of winning a division title in the future.
In another Division 1 quarterfinal game played Tuesday, Corona del Mar defeated Yorba Linda 52-31. AnnaSofia Dickens caught three touchdown passes for Corona del Mar, which now holds a 17-8 record. Addi Stern added two rushing touchdowns, and Brooke Morris recorded two interceptions. Corona del Mar will host Palos Verdes at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals.
Sage Hill's run through the playoffs showcased the depth of its freshman class. The Lightning cracked the Southern Section top 25 ranking before falling to El Toro. The experience provided a foundation for the team as it prepares for the next season with the same core group of players intact.
