A player for Tepatitlán FC will miss the remainder of the Torneo Apertura 2026 after the Mexican Football Federation’s disciplinary commission handed down an 11-match suspension on Tuesday. The ban stems from a physical altercation with referee Lizzet Amairany García Olvera that occurred on Friday. The player’s absence removes him from the squad for all remaining league matches this season.

The incident took place during the 58th minute of a match between Tepatitlán FC and Cancún FC. At that moment, the attacker was already showing signs of frustration with a call made by the referee. García Olvera showed him a second yellow card to send him off the field. The player had previously received a yellow card in the first half of the game.

After leaving the pitch, the player approached the referee with an aggressive posture. He pushed her before walking to the locker room. The push triggered a formal review by the disciplinary body. The commission cited the action as a direct act of violence against the match official.

The 11-match total is the sum of three separate penalties. The player received one match for receiving the second yellow card. Three additional matches were added for using vulgar language and acting in an offensive, insulting, and humiliating manner toward the referee. The final seven matches were a direct deduction for the violent conduct.

The refereeing commission issued a public statement immediately after the incident. The body expressed full support and protection for García Olvera following the physical contact on the field. The player later offered a public apology through his club’s official channels in the days leading up to the verdict.

The suspension applies to the current Apertura 2026 tournament. The player will not return to the field until the next competitive season begins. The decision was finalized on Tuesday, concluding the review process that started after the match on Friday.

The case has drawn attention to the handling of physical contact between players and officials in Mexican soccer. The disciplinary commission applied the existing rules to determine the length of the ban. The player’s status is now finalized for the current competition.
