The man who has spent the last seven years behind the scenes producing the league's biggest entertainment moment is now stepping into the spotlight. Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl halftime show, a role he previously said he would never fill.
The NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation announced on Monday night that Shawn Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z, will be the featured performer for the game on Feb. 14. The event will take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. This venue holds particular significance for the artist, who closed his recent 'Jay-Z 30' concert tour there just days ago.
Roc Nation has held a partnership with the NFL since 2019 to advise on and produce the league's entertainment presentations. At the start of that arrangement, Carter told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, 'If this is about me performing at the Super Bowl, then we can just end this conversation now.' That stance has reversed, with the rapper now set to take the stage himself after a period of speculation.
Carter’s career spans music publishing, artist management, and sports. He co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records and established Roc Nation in 2008, growing it into an entertainment firm that represents artists and athletes. His musical catalog includes the albums 'Reasonable Doubt,' 'The Blueprint,' and 'The Black Album,' along with hits like 'Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)' and 'Empire State of Mind.'
The artist has received 25 Grammy Awards and 89 nominations, placing him second in history only to his wife, Beyoncé. Beyoncé has performed at two Super Bowls. Carter became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 and joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. His 1996 debut album, 'Reasonable Doubt,' was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year.
The NFL’s halftime selection follows the pattern set by last season’s performer, Bad Bunny. After Bad Bunny’s appearance in February, his songs saw sharp gains in streaming charts, playlists, and music discovery platforms in the hours following the broadcast. The league continues to leverage high-profile musical acts to drive engagement across digital and broadcast platforms.
