Major League Baseball teams have until Dec. 1 to complete transactions before a likely lockout halts business when the current collective bargaining agreement expires. The next four weeks represent the final window for clubs to sign free agents and trade players before the market freezes. Executives are moving quickly to avoid being caught without key pieces before the deadline arrives.

The offseason has historically been slow, with front offices relying on similar analytical models to delay decisions. The Winter Meetings, traditionally a hub for major deals, have become more of a starting point for conversations. However, the approaching lockout has compressed the timeline, forcing teams to finalize moves that might otherwise wait until January.

One high-ranking league executive described the process as routine despite the urgency. The executive said teams are lining up preferred players, identifying ways to meet needs, and contacting agents to signal interest. General Manager meetings scheduled for next week will help clarify which players clubs are willing to pursue. This phase usually involves indicating interest and seeing how agents and players respond.

Trades may take precedence over free-agent signings due to the quality of this year's available talent. The free-agent class is described as notably weak, particularly in starting pitching. One left-handed starter from the Los Angeles Angels, Reid Detmers, is expected to be in high demand. He is not set to become a free agent until 2029, making him a valuable asset. The executive noted that after Tarik Skubal, the remaining free-agent names are less exciting, suggesting teams might overpay to secure Detmers in a trade.

Teams are cautious about overreacting to the uncertainty surrounding the 2027 season. Rentals are less attractive because a team could trade away prospects for a player with only one year of control. If there is no baseball in 2027, those assets would be lost without the benefit of the acquisition. Years of contractual control carry more value in this uncertain environment, which could make long-term players harder to acquire.

Despite the caution, agents expect a flurry of activity before the deadline. One agent pointed to the 2021-22 lockout, when a total of $1.7 billion in free-agent contracts were agreed upon before the halt. Kevin Gausman signed a five-year, $110 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, and Marcus Stroman signed a three-year, $71 million contract with the Chicago Cubs. Corey Seager and Marcus Semien also agreed to large deals with the Texas Rangers. The agent believes Sonny Gray, Tyler Mahle, and Gausman fit the profile of players who will sign in the coming weeks. Nothing motivates clubs more than a deadline, and the expectation is that deals will be completed before the CBA expires on Dec. 1.
