Oregon Ducks Ranked No. 23 in Initial Playoff Committee Rankings
The committee's selection diverges from the AP poll, where the Ducks missed the Top 25, as the team seeks a path to the Big Ten title game.

The College Football Playoff committee released its initial rankings on Tuesday, placing the Oregon Ducks at No. 23. This selection marks a distinct departure from the Associated Press poll released the previous Sunday, in which the Ducks were left unranked.
The 2026 campaign has been inconsistent for the program, which began the year as the No. 2 team in the preseason AP Top 25. The Ducks currently hold a 5-3 record. While the committee’s ranking suggests a higher valuation than the AP voters, the team’s position remains vulnerable with four games left to play.
The final 12-team bracket will be announced on Sunday, December 6. Automatic bids are reserved for the champions of the ACC, Big 12, SEC, and Big Ten conferences. Since the expansion of the field, two teams with three losses have secured spots. Clemson in 2024 and Alabama in 2025 both entered the playoff by winning their conference titles.
Oregon’s remaining path relies on finishing with one of the top two in-conference records in the Big Ten. The Ducks are currently part of a group of seven teams with two Big Ten losses. The conference standings as of Nov. 3 show UCLA as the only undefeated team at 5-0. Indiana and Ohio State both have one loss, standing at 5-1 and 4-1, respectively.
Oregon faces Ohio State in Columbus at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. A victory would give the Ducks the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Buckeyes. Currently, the Ducks hold the tiebreaker over No. 20 USC and unranked Northwestern, but would lose to Illinois and UCLA in a tie scenario.
The mathematical requirements for the Ducks to secure a top-two seed are strict. They must win their final four games. Additionally, they need either Indiana to lose a game or UCLA to drop a contest. Indiana has a bye this weekend and will play USC, Washington, and Purdue to finish the season. If the Ducks finish tied with a team they did not play, a complex tiebreaker formula will determine the conference championship participant.
