Early voting in New York concludes on Sunday, leaving just two days for citizens to cast ballots before the general election on Tuesday. As the deadline approaches, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman have intensified their campaigns, targeting voters across the state with final appeals.
Hochul focused her efforts in Brooklyn on Friday morning, where she shook hands and took selfies with supporters. She attacked Blakeman for his alignment with President Donald Trump, arguing that his approach to leadership would feel foreign to New Yorkers. "He wants to bring Trump-style leadership to New York, and that is just abhorrent to all of us," Hochul stated. She claimed that voters are responding by turning out in record numbers compared to 2024 and 2025.
Blakeman spent the same day in Nassau County, where he participated in a ceremony to swear in new police recruits. The event served a dual purpose, handling county business while positioning him as a candidate focused on public safety. He also signed a pledge committing to no new taxes if elected. "Under Kathy Hochul, we're the highest tax state in America, the highest. It's a badge of shame," Blakeman said. He cited utility bills that are 70% higher than the national average and described the state as "dead last" in economic outlook.
The race has also touched on local landmarks, with Hochul addressing the long-standing debate over the name of the bridge connecting Westchester and Rockland counties. She confirmed she has no intention of renaming the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge back to the Tappan Zee Bridge, citing her respect for her predecessor.
Beyond the gubernatorial contest, voters will elect all members of the state Senate and Assembly. Key congressional races are also on the ballot, with potential shifts in control of the House of Representatives. By all accounts, early voting turnout has reached record levels heading into the final weekend.
